I just spoke to a parent and a very interesting thing that he brought up was, "Is there any culture change from the way the students behave and learn now, to the way you learnt in the past?"
My answer was simply a yes, to a more apathetic culture. In the past I remember my EL teacher scolding us about how apathetic we are and how we dont read newspapers, dont find out about world news, and are not bothered about anything else other than the very materialistic things we have around, PSP, handphones, fashion... So when I teach my students now, I am still stumped by really redundant questions like, "So Miss Ng now still got PAP anot?!?!" Thank goodness the class was spontaneous enough to fend off this question and scold that guy for me.
Really, students must understand that they are in school to learn, and not expect the teacher to force you to learn. How can a teacher teach properly when she has to stop once ever 15minutes to stare at someone who is talking? The ideas she is presenting to you will now flow well then, and the momentum of the class is lost. You are responsible for creating your own conducive learning environment. Teachers can help you, only when you want to learn.
